Big White Church Saved from the Wrecking Ball

The congregation of the Second Church of Christ, Scientist (the big white church at Cumberland and Dolores) has agreed not to attempt demolition, but will instead bring in a second congregation and collaborate on a retrofit.  MissionLocal reporter, Heather Smith brings us this news, along with other tidbits and opinion, in a recent interview with Peter Lewis, director of the volunteer non-profit Mission District Neighborhood Association (MDNA). Peter organized a 80 thousand dollar historic survey of the Mission Dolores Neighborhood, including Dolores Park. The survey was completed in November 2009 and has been accepted by the Landmarks Board and now, along with the new Historic Preservation Commission the document serves as a powerful tool for preserving the neighborhood’s historic properties.

Commenting on Dolores Park, Peter says “those bathrooms are a historic resource. They are a part of our survey. They can expand them, but they need to respect the landscape of Dolores Park.” ….Who knew? And given Peter’s track record (see also 200 Dolores ), if he thinks something is worth preserving, it will in all probability stay put.
