Thank you! We had nearly 50 volunteers hit the park with rakes, shovels and brooms. Concentrating on the big lawns, in just two hours we gathered up a heap of the little bits of the junk that spoil our beautiful Dolores!
Volunteers were organized by Dolores Park Work’s Robert Brust and Rec and Park Department‘s Byron Gill. Robert and Byron led the team of volunteers to areas of the park that could use extra attention, while other volunteers branched out to collect all the bits of trash littering the park.
The Clean-Up was followed by introductions to those that made this event possible. A big thanks to:
- Jill Inderdohnen and Lindsay Kefaufeer, co chairs Dolores Park Dogs
- Pam Hemphill, DHIC and Joe Thomas SCG Mission Dolores
- Sunya Ojure, program manager Neighborhood Parks Council
- Kimberley Kiefer, director of volunteer services Recreation and Park Department
- Taylor Smith and the Volunteers from Accenture Eco Team
- Anne Guyen and the volunteers from Boys Hope and Girls Hope
Followed by encouraging words from San Francisco City Attorney and mayoral candidate, Dennis Herrera, and SF District 8 Supervisor Scott Wiener. Touching upon the importance of community and keeping our parks clean and beautiful for all to enjoy.
A community picnic lunch was provided by our generous sponsors. Bi-rite contributed Achiote Grilled Chicken and Grilled Vegetable Focaccia Sandwiches, Broccoli Pasta Salad, and a Spinach Feta Salad. Due Drop In donated 2 Rotisserie Roast Chickens. Tom Taylor Commercial donated the tables for the event. Other food and drink donations were brought by community members.
After a delicious lunch Dolores Park Works’ own Rob Lord and Alex Chaffee led volunteers in Guerrilla Gifting around the park. Giving the gift of trash bags to park patrons in order to leave no trace after their picnic at the park.
A big THANKS to all our volunteers, sponsors, and organizers for all your help in making Dolores Park Earth Day 2011 a success!
By giving back and spending a few hours picking up trash, reminding our friends to “take it with you”, or giving a few dollars to Dolores Park Works, we are making a real difference.
Thank you all!
