Planning is underway for a grand opening celebration of the new Helen Diller Playground at Dolores Park. Friends of Dolores Park Playground steering committee members have told us that they are meeting now with Rec and Park to find a date. Sources say sometime in March.
While a gaggle of City officials and press may say fun for some, others want a kids friendly event, more like the raucous dance parties with The Sippy Cups. We may be looking at two events.
Meanwhile, Rec and Park has been working hard to ready Dolores for a big opening and a busy season. Most of the North field (the Soccer Field) has been smoothed to remove divots and puddles, covered in a mix of top soil, compost, sand, grass rhizomes and seed. Heavily worn areas in the Dog Play Area and along Dolores Street have received the deluxe treatment, new sod and steel fencing. The strip along Dolores alone required 1830 square feet of new sod.
Rec and Park is reporting this week that the playground is 85% complete. Teak and steel benches have appeared and a Super Slide now juts off the terrace. We should expect to see a composite play surface under the swings and swath of sod around the playground’s edge soon.
