The new Dolores Park Helen Diller Playground will be “substantially complete ” by the end of this month and ready for a spring opening. This according to Nancy Gonzalez-Madynski, chair of the Friends of Dolores Park Playground. Rec and Parks capital division confirmed today a March completion in the Project Status Report.

The project is approximately 75% complete. All of the concrete walls have been poured. Except for staging area for flatwork work. Play equipment have started to arrive and are being laid out. Trees and Planting are ongoing, sod is being placed. Anticipate safety surfacing to commence mid-February.

What may be even more exciting have been the arrival of a semi-truck load of trees and shrubs last week and the installation today of the Bridge. This bright international orange causeway connects the now landscaped central Climbing-hill with the top of the soon to arrive Supper Slide. Can’t wait! More photos here.

The successful on-time completion of this project will mark a great success for The Friends of Dolores Park Playground, Rec and Park, philanthropy and the 2008 Park Bond program.

“Single Serving Day aims to create community by organizing volunteer days for singles.” event organizers told us. ”We start with a mixer, break off into a selection of volunteer events, and wrap up with an after-soiree.” For this first run, helping Dolores Park Works and Girls on the Run, a program for at risk preteen girls, were the two volunteer opportunities. Dolores Park volunteers got to work outside on and incredibly sunny day, alongside extremely grateful Rec and Park gardeners, moving a mixture of compost and soil to the northern lawn, spreading the mixture into bald areas of the lawn, dispersing grass seeds, and packing the soil down. A big thanks to Single Serving Day and Rec and Park for all their hard work to keep the park green and beautiful, and to Hillary Turner Photography for all the great photographs she shot of the event.

For more information on Single Serving Day check out their website. The next Single Serving Day is February 4 and we will be a part of it.

Small businessman and artisan brewer, Jim Woods is planning to open Cerveceria de Mate Veza, a small (15 seat), self-service restaurant, serving Argentine influenced cuisine. Yes there will be empanadas. This is the old Lilah Belle’s spot, corner of 18th and Church and he has signed a lease. Traci Higgens says Lilah Belle’s will close at the end of the month, but is continuing with her meal home delivery concept. Jim does not plan to make major alterations, though the prominent orange awning may go. He hopes to open by this Spring.

Jim already makes and sells a line of organic craft beer, Mate Veza that he brews under contract in Ukiah and sells throughout the west in over 400 locations. He is applying for an ABC type 23 brewery License and which will allow him to install a small 20 gallon kettle. Jim told us this is a very, very small brewery and would typically be seen in a home or garage. The brewery will be more for testing recipes and special brews, Jim says. Of some note, Mate Veza is brewed with yerba mate, the South American herb and contains caffeine.
