Community Invited to Dolores Park Renovation Workshop

The first in a series of community workshops to plan for the rehabilitation of  Dolores Park will be Thursday, June 2,  6:30 pm at Mission High cafeteria. At this first workshop, we will brainstorm a wish list of park improvements and tour the park to create a shared vision of what works for the park and what could use improvement.  As Rec and Park invitation handed out in the park over the weekend states-

The well-loved amenities of Dolores Park are in need of significant rehabilitation. These changes can’t happen without input from the users of Mission Dolores Park. With your help, the park will soon be as good as new. Please join your neighbors at the first community meeting to discuss the improvements and help ensure that the plan addresses the diverse needs of the park and its users.

The June 2nd workshop will be followed by 3 additional design sessions on June 30, July 21 and September 1 where we will decide the priorities of the project, create a conceptual plan and then refine the details.

We will be working with a design team lead by two landscape architecture firms Royston, Hanamoto, Alley &Abey and  Hamilton + Aitken.  Aditya Advani, of RHAA told us that the the team “will strive to improve what’s there, not reinvent. This is our philosophy as architects.”

The committee had an initial first meeting on April 27 and discussed who should be included in the group to create full community representation. We also covered the need for a robust communication plan to assure that the planning process is carried out in full public view. All present agreed that they understood these were public, open-door meetings. Dolores Park Works has agreed to help publish the records of our meetings and has urged Rec and Park to do the same.

Our next Steering Committee meeting will be May 26, 6 pm at Dolores Park Church, 455 Dolores Street. If you have a particular concern, please call Jake Gilchrist, Project Manger, at 415-581-2561 or Steve Rasmussen Cancian,  member of the project design team, at 415-409-1814.

Temporary access road coming first

Playground Construction

Sketch of the areas to be fenced during the construction of the Helen Diller Playground

San Francisco Recreation and Park Department (RPD) and Neighborhood Parks Council, and Friends of Dolores Park Playground announced today the renovation of the Mission Dolores Park Playground.  The schedule calls for construction to begin at the beginning of June 2011, and the estimated completion date is February 2012.  Below is an excerpt from today’s media release:

On April 21, 2011 the Recreation and Parks Commission awarded Bauman Landscape & Construction the contract to renovate the playground in Mission Dolores Park. Construction workers will be on-site between May 23rd and June 1st installing a new temporary access driveway into the park just south of the intersection of Dolores and 19th Street for use by service vehicles while the main driveway is closed for the playground construction project.  This construction activity will result in the installation of a temporary safety barricade immediately around the area of work. Bauman Landscape Construction is expected to begin staging and performing pre-construction activities during the first week of June.  Mobilization activities include the placement of the perimeter construction fencing and the project trailer.   The playground, picnic tables and adjacent lawn areas within the designated Areas of Work will be officially closed to the public once the perimeter construction fence is installed and the playground site is handed off to the Contractor.  The remainder of Mission Dolores Park will remain open and accessible to the public.

All RPD up-dates on the Hellen Diller Playground project are available on the department site.
