Rec and Park says, new signs asks the public to “help us take care of the park.”

We asked Eric Andersen, Park Services Manager, area 6, about the new Dolores Park signage that went up last week.  Why now?  The signs do not seem to have any language or rules we have not seen posted in Dolores Park in the past few years. Here is his response…

The new signs were installed to address a lack of comprehensive signage in Dolores Park. While there are individual signs posted throughout the park, the new signs provide this information in  unified locations at park entrances.  We are also responding to  requests from community members and other city agencies about the need for additional signage in the park.  The sign installation was planned some time ago and there is no particular significance to the timing.

These three three signs contain standard language used in welcome signs  throughout our park system, there was nothing in particular related to Dolores Park in their message. Barbecues and open fires are prohibited in all of our parks by fire regulations. There may have been signs posted in Dolores Park in the past, these would not be unusual in our parks. The barbecues create  significant damage to the park when discarded coals are dumped on the landscape.

We have also noticed that SFPD has in the past week or so stepped in to enforce the 10pm closing. How is your relationship with Mission Station? And is there a new follow-up enforcement plan for Dolores?

SFPD has been devoting resources to closing the park (at 10pm) over the past couple of months.  Maintaining the park hours seems to be one of the best ways to provide for public safety and curb some of the more damaging incidents in the park. I do communicate with Mission Station regularly on issues that are going on within the park.

Dolores Park Rehab Planning Nears End

Workshop #5 rescheduled.  The community planning phase of the Dolores Park rehabilitation is coming down to the wire. This Thursday Night Next Thursday, October 20 the Mission High cafeteria will host the first, of two final Dolores Park Rehabilitation Workshops. We are starting early, 6pm and are planning to go late, so that “the Project Team can present the first complete draft of the Rehabilitation Plan, including all the proposed improvements.” according to Steve Cancian,  the project outreach leader.  ”Community members will then have ample time to work in small groups to review each and every aspect of the plan.  The hope it to collect community members’ final comments on the plan, so then the project team can prepare one last draft for confirmation at the final workshop on October 27th.”

The design team seems to have committed to a large path bisecting the park, and the path as has been the tradition in Dolores, will be shared by park patrons and Rec and Park maintenance crews. The path will also be ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant. We can also expect to see presentations on a look for the two new restrooms, maintenance shed,  viewing plaza at 20th and Church, improved and ADA compliant 19th Street entrance and plaza, improved treatment of the central walkway and bridge and a interesting new idea for the Church Street entrances.

One key question still remains, what to do with the old clubhouse/restroom now that we are building two new restrooms and a maintenance shed. The clubhouse will now be redundant.  Do we free-up scarce open space and maintenance with demolition or preserve and creativly repurpose a key historic element of the park?  This should be fun.

”Everyone interested in Dolores Park is urged to attend this workshop to assure your voice is reflected in the final plan.” – Dolores Park Design Team

Rec and Park Posts the Dolores Park Rules

There is nothing new here folks, Dolores Park neighbors have been demanding signage for years and Rec and Park has recently posted most of these “Dolores Rules” already.

Welcome to Dolores Park

Welcome to Dolores Park

SFPD has told us, they can’t enforce Park rules if they are not prominently posted. So, if we want help with problems in Dolores, signage is where we begin. Of course, it’s all in the follow through.  We did see an officer on a dirt bike scoot through this afternoon.
