More Dolores planning meetings in the works

The Dolores Park design team has proposed  postponing the September 29 community Workshop and adding two October dates, 10/13 and 10/27.  We should have confirmation soon. The extra dates are necessary to complete our planning.

After four community workshops,  Rec and Park has released the initial  sketch of an improved Dolores Park. However, much of this plan is still in contention and the sketch does not include any firm decisions on the fate of the clubhouse, the new cross-park road and placement of the dog play-areas. We also still need to have public discussions on the historic significance of Dolores and on the ability to construct many of the elements proposed given the allotted budget. The central paths and the entrances also need a plan.

Steve Cancian, lead architect for Community Outreach on the park’s design has told the Park Rehabilitation Steering Committee that he has confidence we can come to a community consensus on all of these issues by the end of the last workshop. The Community Steering Committee will be meeting every week in October to help frame and clarify all these issues. We have been promised plenty of time to discuss and deliberate in our meetings and we are confident this will allow us to design the best plan  possible.

Tree Falls on Hidalgo

The Black Acacia cracked in two.

The Black Acacia cracked in two.

Shortly after noon, the Friday before Labor Day weekend, the large Black Acacia that shades Miguel Hidalgo’s statue cracked open and came crashing down. Hidalgo seems to be undamaged, the fate of the tree is unknown.

The park was beginning to fill and there were several witnesses to the accident, but no one was hurt.  Witness remember hearing a sharp crack and the crash. One visitor was near by  the statue taking photos.

Hidalgo seems undamaged.

Hidalgo seems undamaged.

The black Acacia is the largest tree in the area and did seem to be in good shape. It now has a gaping wound and according to park gardeners, may not be salvageable. Tree care experts from Rec and Park will need to make that call. The Public Art and Civic Art Collection of the San Francisco Arts Commission will come out and assess the statue.  In the mean time, the yellow caution tape remains in place.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Dolores

Brilliant Summer of Love staging of the Shakespeare comedy, A Midsummers Night's Dream.

Brilliant Summer of Love staging of the Shakespeare comedy, A Midsummer Night's Dream.

“The setting of this Midsummer is in the late 1960′s.  The summer of love was in full swing and the times they were a-changin’. Into this sixties melting pot of music, sexual freedom, creative expression, and politics comes the wild and beloved story of Midsummer Night’s Dream. Midsummer is about magic, love and family–the family we are born into and the family we create. Simply staged on the Dolores Park lawn, this production promises music, fun and, naturally, some family friendly free love.”

This is a Women’s Will production, the Bay’s all Women Shakespeare company.  Shows Saturday and Sunday, August 27 and 28 at 2pm.
