  • With 73% of Workshop #5  in favor of demolition, the clubhouse is likely a lost cause. Read Mission Locals account of the vote here. However, Some Steering Committee members are saying the question was unfairly stated. “I understand that at last Thursday’s meeting many of the groups voted to tear down the club house — but that was a bit of a set up.  Essentially the groups were presented with either tearing down the club house or choosing one of 6 other options – all of which were pre-emptively declared infeasible.  Not surprisingly, many groups chose tearing it down.”  I expect the idea that the clubhouse is historically important will not just go away.”

Plan to Move Food Truck Out of Dolores Goes Ahead

If all goes according to plan, The Chaac-Mool Food truck, on the park’s 19th street promenade, will move to the curb. A proposal by Supervisor Scott Wiener would move the food truck from its prominent spot within the park to its periphery, where 19th Street dead-ends into the park. Wiener described the measure as a compromise between community members who believe that food trucks commercialize The City’s few bastions of nature and the Recreation and Park Department, which wants to collect permit fees from food trucks.  The San Francisco Examiner has the story:

“Personally, I don’t have a problem with there being a food truck in the park.” Wiener said. “However, there are quite a few folks who do. This to me is a good compromise — basically it will be right on the edge of the park, but not in it.”

The measure would transfer ownership of that portion of the street from the Department of Public Works to the parks department, which would enable the parks department to move the truck to the street while retaining the permit revenue that it generates. Although the measure would not require the department to relocate the cart, Wiener said both departments are on board with the idea.

Workshop Rescheduled to 10/20

Be sure you have Thursday night’s (10/20) workshop on your calendars.  We are meeting 6 to 9 pm in the Mission High Cafeteria.  As we begin to review the final plan, Rec and Park would like to be sure everyone has an equal opportunity to comment.  Steve Cancian, organizer for the community planning phase of the  Dolores Park Rehabilitation wrote,

My apologies for any inconvenience we caused by rescheduling last week’s workshop.   When we realized that some people had not gotten notice of the meeting, we felt the best option was to postpone the session and be sure everyone had an equal opportunity to participate.

Rec and Park says, new signs asks the public to “help us take care of the park.”

We asked Eric Andersen, Park Services Manager, area 6, about the new Dolores Park signage that went up last week.  Why now?  The signs do not seem to have any language or rules we have not seen posted in Dolores Park in the past few years. Here is his response…

The new signs were installed to address a lack of comprehensive signage in Dolores Park. While there are individual signs posted throughout the park, the new signs provide this information in  unified locations at park entrances.  We are also responding to  requests from community members and other city agencies about the need for additional signage in the park.  The sign installation was planned some time ago and there is no particular significance to the timing.

These three three signs contain standard language used in welcome signs  throughout our park system, there was nothing in particular related to Dolores Park in their message. Barbecues and open fires are prohibited in all of our parks by fire regulations. There may have been signs posted in Dolores Park in the past, these would not be unusual in our parks. The barbecues create  significant damage to the park when discarded coals are dumped on the landscape.

We have also noticed that SFPD has in the past week or so stepped in to enforce the 10pm closing. How is your relationship with Mission Station? And is there a new follow-up enforcement plan for Dolores?

SFPD has been devoting resources to closing the park (at 10pm) over the past couple of months.  Maintaining the park hours seems to be one of the best ways to provide for public safety and curb some of the more damaging incidents in the park. I do communicate with Mission Station regularly on issues that are going on within the park.
